Summary of interview
From an engineering point of view, Li Man Ching reviews the design, usage and installation of the negative pressure wards during SARS as an emergency measure taken against spread of infection within HA hospitals. He established a ‘central combat facility’ in the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital to test the ventilation system. From March to April 2003, he developed up to five generations of the ventilation system. Li Man Ching relates some of his toughest personal challenges and life-changing experiences during the period. He believes the psychological wellbeing of the team and the mutual trust between the engineering team and medical & nursing staff were key factors in their fight against the epidemic.
